We had decided that we wanted to see the Amalfi Coast and had looked at campsites closer to the area during our trip planning. However, since we had chosen a wide sandy beach a bit north of Naples, we had to take a bit of a drive to get there. We drove to Salerno and planned to take the recommended route along the coast. Along the way, we encountered many beautiful places, charming little towns with narrow alleys, small cafes, and tons of ceramic shops. The only problem was that parking was absolutely impossible! This resulted in many cars parking illegally on the already narrow and winding roads, causing even more traffic jams. We had to wait for oncoming traffic to pass, at some places we had to squeeze through with side mirrors overlapping, and at one point, we had to reverse about 30 meters so a bus could pass. Thank goodness we didn't have the caravan with us!
It turned out to be quite an adventurous trip because we didn't manage to stop, eat, or swim along the good 50 km coastal stretch we covered. We had to drive further north along the coast and see if we could find a place on the other side. There was a bit more space between cars, and we could have probably found a cozy spot in Seiano, but we ended up entering a tunnel and couldn't find an exit:-( Therefore, we ended up too close to Naples near an industrial port and had the first unimpressive meal of the trip, but the staff at the little cafeteria were incredibly friendly and still serving food after 2:30 PM.
At this point, we decided to change our plans and had a little vote on how to salvage the somewhat disastrous day. The vote was in favor of a shopping center with toy stores and air conditioning, as the temperature had crept above 40 degrees. We found a nice center northeast of Naples and spent a couple of hours there, doing some shopping along the way. We didn't buy much, but it was still fun to people-watch and soak in the atmosphere.
It was almost 9 PM when we returned to the campsite, so we decided to try the on-site restaurant, which luckily offered quickly served pizza and pasta, along with some cold drinks. What a day we had gotten ourselves into!
