Driving to Ossiacher See in Austria - Day 68

(English version below)

Hyggeligt.

Travel day started like most of the previous ones, with the alarm clock set relatively early, but it wasn't really necessary due to the thunderous noise outside. We looked at some radar images and decided to stay in bed a bit longer and try to hit the apparent only gap in the rain between 8 and 9. It worked out fine, and with a little help from a couple of our neighbors to get out of the mud, we got going.

Our next stop was initially planned to be in Slovenia, with a slightly more easterly route home, but due to all the flooding they've had earlier in the summer, we've decided to skip that route, even though some of the closed roads are supposedly passable again. The alternative became Ossiacher See, close to Villach and the Slovenian border. If crossing the border isn't too complicated, we hope to explore both countries from this location.

The drive went pretty well, with one small exception being that we missed the fact that there was a toll requirement on the Slovenian roads... Fortunately, no fines, as we managed to Google the requirement and found a gas station to pay at :-) It was gray and rainy all the way, so we didn't really get to enjoy the scenic drive, but it thankfully stopped raining when we arrived at the campground and needed to set up. The temperature, after months of warmth, is now at 13 degrees Celsius! So, we had to set up our large awning with the sides again. We haven't needed it since our last stop in Austria and have actually found it a bit silly to carry it around.

While we were setting up and the kids were exploring the wet playground, one of the staff from the campground came over and told us there was free pony riding if we were interested, just across the road. The kids were keen on that, so they quickly found sneakers and a few things, and off we went. Here, for the first time, we could feel that we're getting towards the end of the holiday season, as there was a man with a truck and four ponies standing outside, munching on grass. There was another girl and her parents! But that was actually great because then there was no waiting involved. Sara had to lead and control the ponies herself, so Naja and Georg had to wait for each other. It went well, and they managed to use the phone to take a few pictures. So now we have about 100 pictures (and short video clips) of the same pony! I'll spare you some of them on the blog :-)

The day had gone by quickly, and Naja and Kenneth went out to shop, but it was already so late that we ended up grabbing a quick pasta dinner around the corner instead of cooking. We finished the day by watching a Smurfs cartoon under the covers. Cozy.
