Grotte di Castellana and Alberobello

(English version below)

What an eventful day! We had exciting plans ahead as we had scheduled a visit to the Grotte di Castellana at 6 pm, so we spent the day relaxing and enjoying some swimming before heading out. We couldn't resist trying out the newly purchased snorkel masks, and everyone had a blast watching the many fish. The waves were a bit big, so we took a little break along the way to observe small fish and catch crabs on the cliffs before another round of snorkeling.

Excitedly, we set off towards the cave, which stretches for several kilometers, 60 to 122 meters below the surface, and maintains a constant temperature of 16 to 18 degrees Celsius, so we had to dig out some sweaters for the first time in a long while. We had booked the short English tour, which lasted about an hour, covering one kilometer with just the right amount of explanation. Perfect for us! The cave was gigantic, even used for theater performances at times, and it featured long passages with classic stalactite and stalagmite formations. The entire region of Italy was once submerged under the sea millions of years ago, so there were even small sea creature fossils from the time of dinosaurs!

Afterward, we drove to Alberobello, part of UNESCO's World Heritage Site, to see the fascinating round houses with cone-shaped roofs that the place is renowned for. We stumbled upon a charming pizzeria, where we could soak in the evening city atmosphere while indulging in some really delicious pizzas. By the end of the day, we were running low on energy, but we strolled through some of the quaint streets in the city center on our way back to the car.

However, we got a little surprise when the car wouldn't start! We were parked on a slightly uneven surface, so we rolled it to a flat spot, and after trying the start/stop button a few times and contemplating what to do next, the "tow button" disappeared, and the car was back in action. We drove home with both kids falling asleep in the car after a long but truly fantastic day!
