Monkeys & Eagles! - Day 75

(English version below)

Back to Georg's turn to choose the day's adventures, but with lower ambitions than last week. We had our eyes on an eagle/falcon show nearby, and he wanted to go (when we couldn't find a par-3 course for him to play on, he's nothing like his father ;-)). So after the slow morning routine, we drove towards the castle, where there are shows 3-4 times a day. Next to it is a monkey forest, which our "cards" also gave access to, so we parked the car in the area and first went to see the monkeys.

Here, we had a guided tour in the forest with about 123 baboons that could roam freely within the enclosure. Despite the tour being in German, we managed to pick up some details along the way, and it was fun to see them in a more natural environment where there's still human intervention. Here, the alpha male eats first, and only when he's done, does he make room for others who also clearly have a kind of hierarchy. They had various "challenges" in the forest, including pulling on some ropes in a specific order to get the fruit out. Apparently, only 3-4 of the monkeys could figure it out, but they didn't want to pull the ropes until the other monkeys had gone far enough away not to steal their fruit when it came out. Some of them could swim and dive, so they got extra food for showing off their skills to the enthusiastic spectators. Especially when a banana was thrown into the water, there was a lot of shouting to stay away!

Afterward, we went up to the castle with the birds. You could see some of them in their cages on the way up, and it was first-come-first-served for the seats. However, the sun was scorching, and we hadn't brought enough to drink, so we went back for a couple of liters of fluids before the show started at 1 PM. Here, we saw different types of birds of prey flying over our heads while catching food in various ways. The golden eagle impressed us the most, and the peregrine falcon was the biggest disappointment because it was so small (we've read books about it as it's the fastest bird in the world and can fly up to 400 km/h!). All in all, a great show in incredibly beautiful surroundings in an old castle on top of a small mountain.

Afterwards, we returned to the campsite for a quick bite, some playtime and badminton, and then a longer paddleboard trip for mom and the kids before we thrashed dad in Rummikub on the lawn along the lake. Then, the day had flown by, so we put together some dinner (easier when you remember to shop) and enjoyed ourselves until bedtime. It's a bit chilly at night, and instead of turning on the heat, it's time for the children's bedtime! That means one child with Sara "upstairs" and one with Kenneth in the double bed. The kids think it's a party, while the adults look more and more tired in the morning when the first cup of coffee is made with the dearly beloved little Nespresso machine...
